Abby Shields
Dear Friend,

The month of November always brings an attention to thankfulness. Whether it is a gratitude journal, a thankfulness challenge on social media, or sharing the year’s blessings around the Thanksgiving table, focusing on gratitude and blessing brings joy and right perspective to the heart. Blessings listed usually include things like family, health, provision, and even Jesus. And while I began contemplating for myself all that I was grateful for, I came across this quote from author Ann Voskamp which reads,

“A life contemplating the blessings of Christ becomes a life acting the love of Christ.”

The blessings of Christ; while surely the blessings of Christ encompass all that was for mentioned, when I concentrate specifically on the blessings flowing from the person of Christ in whom I am in fellowship with, there is quite a different list that emerges. I am thankful for His fierce and unconditional love, His forgiveness, His compassion, His healing, His grace, His presence, His faithfulness. As the naming continues, and the list grows, my heart becomes full, my mind is re-centered, and out of experiencing these blessings of Christ, like Voskamp describes I am moved to “act out the love of Christ” to those I come in contact with.

As many of you know, and have experienced, NHLB along with its partners offers very tangible ways to act out the love of Christ over the holiday season. The first of these comes at Thanksgiving. In recent years, we have joined forces with Faith Bible Church and combined our resources with their “Turkey Train” outreach that provides Thanksgiving meals to those in need. If you know of a family in need of this blessing, please email their name and phone number to or call our office at 985-264-8808. The deadline for registration is November 15 and distribution will be on Tuesday, November 21st from 3:00-7:00 pm. If you would like to make a monetary donation or donate food items, contributions can be made out to NHLB and designated to “Turkey Train” or you can drop off food items at our office (1796 West Causeway approach 2nd floor ) from the list provided in this newsletter.
Secondly, our Adopt-a-family Christmas program is another opportunity to offer support over the holidays. Just as with the Turkey Train, we are already beginning to compile names of families in need of this blessing. Through supporters like you, last year we were able to serve over 50 families and this ministry continues to grow each year. If you feel so prompted to participate in our Christmas Adopt-a-Family program this year there are a few ways you can get involved. You or a group can:
• Adopt a Family
• Donate Gifts
• Contribute Financial Donations
• Volunteer your time to help with assimilation and distribution the week of December 11th-15th
If you know of a family in need, or you would like to participate on any level in our Adopt-A-Family Program, please visit our website, for more information and registration. Register soon as our gift collection will close on Sunday, December 10th!
God has always provided above and beyond what we could have hoped for or imagined during our holiday ministry, and we are trusting in that again. Your support this holiday season is vital in making this outreach a success. We ask you to prayerfully consider participating in these outreach opportunities this year. Thank you so much in advance! God Bless!
In His Grip,
Abby Shields
