As a family-focused ministry, we are excited to celebrate Mother’s Day this month. Motherhood can be the toughest, most-rewarding, thankless but most important role in the family unit. While I believe society has diminished the importance of mothers, I think Jesus makes it clear from the cross the high esteem we should hold our mothers. From the cross, he spoke very few words but some of his last were addressed to his mother. A good mother is a model of sacrifice and unconditional love. Her journey is marked with great joys but also incredible heartache. Whether it be through our parenting classes or our counseling and Care ministry, we have walked alongside women with many different journeys of motherhood. There are the moms of many and the moms of one. Single moms, working moms, and those that stay at home, all of which deserve to be celebrated for their courage and self-sacrifice.
This Mother’s Day there is another type of mother that God has brought to our counseling ministry. She is the bereaved mother. Her child is already dancing with the angels in heaven, and while all she has to show are pictures, stories, and memories of her sweet blessing, she is no less a mother. She is the bravest kind of mother who has suffered the greatest loss yet has the courage to let her heart remain open to love.
On Mother’s Day a bereaved mother’s pain can get overlooked by the joy of the day, but on June 10th we will be celebrating these mothers and their angels by supporting an event called, “Beauty From Ashes”. This will be a luncheon for bereaved Mother’s from 10:30am-1:30pm at the Lakehouse in Mandeville. Admission is free and it is open to anyone who has lost a child no matter how long your child was with you or how long ago your loss took place. You can register at 985-264-8808. If you know of anyone who may be blessed by this event, please help us by spreading the word.
God has a beautiful story to write through any woman who becomes a mother. No matter what that journey looks like, God can make strength out of our shortcomings, and beauty out of sorrow. Someone once said, “Motherhood is a choice you make everyday, to put someone else’s happiness and well-being ahead of your own, to teach the hard lessons, to do the right thing even when you’re not sure what the right thing is…and to forgive yourself, over and over again for doing everything wrong.” We celebrate ALL mothers and the beautiful journey that God has you on! God Bless and Happy Mother’s Day!
In His Grip,
